One of the 12 core principles of Whole Person Development is holding space for other, creating time outside of time to seek stillness, reflection, and in some cases even a bit of chaos, all of which, with a little work can lead us to catharsis. One of the most accessible ways to do this is through fostering a routine practice of mindful meditation. You can see a great talk by the neuroscientist Sara Lazar on the benefits HERE.

Make Trybe uses Transformative Design to re-examine the idea of meditation and to offer an accessible and inviting space in which you aren't asking yourself "Am I doing this right?" but instead focusing on your experience and in being in community.

This takes the form of two variations on traditional zazen [sitting meditation] and kinhin [walking meditation]: Saved by Fiction and Saved by Symphony. Come #getstill

SAVED BY FICTION: A literary MEDITATION

Saved by Fiction is a meditation series in which the lessons of Atticus Finch or Hester Prynne translate into the magical aids on your journey of clarity, self discovery, or just the end of a really long day.

Sometimes when you read, your mind drifts and you end up tracing the same line 5 times having not once actually taken in what you read,  and suddenly you're scolding yourself to re-focus. In SBF, we encourage your mind to drift into that very state. Everyone likes to be read to, to sit back and let the soothing nature of hearing but not hearing allow our minds to be both full and empty simultaneously, to let words come in but to not hold onto them.

Born from a simultaneous love of classic literature [of all canons] and zazen meditation, Saved by Fiction is a 90 minute guided meditation in which a a portion of a book is read during the sitting portion of meditation [fiction, pros, poetry] with kinhin breaks [walking clockwise loops] at the middle and end of sitting.

SAVED BY SYMPHONY:  A TONAL MEDITATION

A meditation series, in which instead of words, symphonic works translate into the magical aids on your journey of clarity, self discovery, or just the end of a really long day.

Born from a simultaneous love of instrumental music [of all canons] and zazen meditation, Saved by Symphony is a 90 minute guided meditation/gathering in which a symphonic work is played during the sitting portion of meditation with kinhin breaks [walking clockwise loops] at the middle, and end of sitting.
